She's always been a serious student. Growing up with parents with such high-calling careers and serious minds will do that to a person, but her dedication is more than that. Jessie knows that good grades are tantamount to a good future, or so she's always believed up until lately. Recently, however, it's been getting harder and harder to put those good grades first. She can usually ace any material her teachers throw at her -- she's smarter than most of them already after all --, but then there's tomorrow's test for a bright shining example of how she's become . . . lazy.

Lazy is the only word for it, she tells herself. She's been knowing this test has been coming for weeks. She's had plenty of chances to study the material, but she's barely been doing her homework for each class. She's still confused over some of the material she knows will be on that dreaded test -- Yet, here she is, still at the Max, still goofing off.

But it feels so great to goof off! It feels so wonderful to sit right here and do nothing except hold Slater, feels his arms around her, talk with him, laugh with him, smile with him . . . Dear Lord, she's got it bad for the man! She never thought that a man could hold such power over her. Yet he does. He does, and she lets him wield it like any of the other silly, giggly girls at school.

"What's wrong, Momma?" he asks suddenly, and she notes there's only one dimple in his smile. It's not as broad or bright as normal but is filled with concern instead.

She sighs and drops her gaze from his. "I . . . " She swings a foot, careful not to connect with his powerful shin. She gulps as a memory runs through her mind, making her palms sweat, her breath and heartbeat quicken, and her mind want to think about anything but stupid grades and stupid, stupid tests that demand so much of her time. She should have studied last night. She should have studied last week, a little each night before bedtime instead of talking to him on the phone until they both fell asleep, listening to the sounds of each other's voices, if not just breath. But she didn't, so she's got to pay the price tonight. She's got to study tonight -- that's all there is to it.

He reaches up and runs a hand over her long hair. She loves it when he touches her. It's like nothing else she's ever experienced, sending warmth spreading from wherever his fingers are all the way through every part of her body. She's discovered she has parts she didn't even know were active since their first kiss, and he's always teaching her new things -- although it's nothing that she can use at Bayside or to further her education or career. It's nothing, she tells herself firmly as her mother is always reminding her, that can help her further her life, period.

She blushes and bites her bottom lip. If she goes home, leaving him here, there are so many other girls who can come and hit on him. She knows he'll enjoy their attention, even if he will be true. But she's got to do it. She's got to study. She's got to ace that test tomorrow and make certain she has a great future! An image of them holding hands and matching rings gleaming on their ring fingers flashes wildly through her mind, but Jessie forces it away, setting her teeth and mind against it. She's always known she deserves a better future to just being married to some guy.

His dark, questioning gaze seems to hold sway over her as it pulls her eyes back down into his. "What is it?" he asks again, softly so no one else can hear. "What's wrong, Momma?"

"I . . . " Her voice trails off, but finally, she sighs heavily, her shoulders sagging as though the weight of the world's upon them. It's not the world, or life, or even more than just one night. "I've got to study," she says at last. "For tomorrow's test."

"Oh." He makes a face. "That thing. You know, us jocks have to make certain grades to be able to stay on the team." She looks at him curiously, wondering why he would say such a thing, but doesn't have long to wait as he offers, "I could study with you."

Her eyes search his. Again, her breath quickens, but she tells herself not to hope. "Study?" she asks, piquing an eyebrow at him. "Really study? Just study? Slater, I've got to study tonight."

"Yes, babe, really study. Maybe you can help me make sense of that damn equation."

His admission is rewarded with a brilliant smile as she also quickly hides her own doubt. "Of course I can."

"And if we get done early -- " he says, but stops at the sharp look she gives him. He loves her with all his heart, but he knows she's very serious about her studies and a bit of a bookworm to boot. "Okay," he admits, holding up a hand. "If I get bored, I can always whip out my Gameboy." She's clearly still not pleased with his suggestion, so he adds, "On mute." That seems to do the trick as she instantly brightens again.

"Okay. But no hanky panky -- "

He starts to bark a laugh at her phrase, but the chuckle catches in his throat as she leans closer, pressing her chest and forehead against his. He can feel her breasts, tight and perky, through the sheer cotton of her shirt. Red hot longing floods every part of his system. "No hanky panky tonight, Slater," she repeats sternly. "I mean it. I have to pass this test." Her lips are but a breath away from his, and he aches with everything in him to close that remaining distance.

"Okay," he agrees reluctantly. "No hanky panky. I'll be a gentleman when we get to your place, as long as you don't tempt and tease me any more, Momma," he says, and then he closes the distance that remains between them, covering her mouth with his own and dipping his thrusting tongue into her hot, sweet nectar.

They're both moaning within seconds. It isn't until Kelly clears her throat that Jessie finally breaks off the kiss, both of her hands planted against Slater's strong chest. She can feel his muscles twitching underneath her palms as clearly as if there was no cloth between them at all. She swallows hard, trying to quell the desire the filling her, and licks her lips. "No hanky panky," she says again, this time to herself more than to him.

She forces herself up off of his lap and looks back down reluctantly at him. Dear Lord, how she wants this man! How she yearns with everything in her for this man! How she loves him too!! But it's just one night. One night that's needed for her attention to be elsewhere. One night of study that's required for her future. She bites her lip again as she gazes at him and thinks that maybe, just maybe, her future would be glorious enough if she was to be his wife. It would be glorious, she thinks. Maybe that is all she needs.

Slater forces his attention away from her. He gathers their books and stands, then takes her hand and leads her from the Max. His every action is smooth and calm, but inside, passion is roaring like a lion inside of him. He wants so desperately to just find a quiet, empty room and have his way with her, but studying's important to her. School's important. She believes it's necessary to do good in school to have a good future. He knows better, but her doing well in her studies remains important to him because it's important to her.

As they walk, side by side, he notices a Help Wanted sign and makes note of it. He needs to come back tomorrow and see if he can get that job so he can start saving up for the role he yearns to play in her future. This thing between them isn't just a one-night thing. He wants to spend the rest of his life with her, and if she'll just say yes, he'll follow her whatever it takes and let her wear the pants for the rest of their lives. He gulps down rising fear at the thought that things might not go the way he wants, the mere idea that she might not let him have the future he so desperately wants as much more than just a worldwide famous ball player. He wants to be her man, her husband forever, but first he has to buy the ring -- and then pray with all his heart that she will say 'yes' to a dumb jock like him.

Jessie moves closer into his embrace; he wraps his arm around her and holds her close. She leans her head against his shoulder and steals a quick kiss on his bicep. Maybe she will say yes, he thinks hopefully. Even a dumb jock can dream after all.

The End
