I hit Walmart while I was downtown and Stewart’s on the way home.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a walk with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter.

I made a pumpkin pie because mom asked me to. (I make it in a small shell, so put some of the pumpkin filling in a small pyrex dish. I took her that dish. She had it when I made it before Thanksgiving and really enjoyed it.)

I went with one of my own teas again this morning, Celestial Seasonings’ Mandarin Orange Spice. This blend combined the tart flavor of mandarin oranges with aromatic spices, cloves, and coriender to create a bright. lively brew that transports tea drinkers to exotic destinations with every sip. I wouldn’t say I was transported anywhere, but it tasted good.

My stomach tried to rebel on me again this morning. cutting for those who don't care to read )

We went to Texas Roadhouse with friends for supper, yay! I managed to write ~300 words on my SFBB fic and Zoo Tampa was my background tv in the evening. I wish I’d gotten more written, but between going downtown, visiting mom, and eating out, there wasn’t much time for it.

Temps started out at 19.4(F) and dropped to 15.6 before I left the house! There was sun in the morning, but then it was overcast. Temps reached 27.3. The roads were good in the morning, but the wind picked up, so we ran into some snow blown into the road on our way to Texas Roadhouse.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing ~okay when I saw her. She seemed tired. She’d already eaten, but even so she had some of the pumpkin pie filling I took her. Sister A was there when I arrived and Ian showed up after. Her BFF showed up later in the afternoon and Sister S was there when I called in the evening. She had a nice string of visitors, which she likes.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

Baby's First Moodboards. Still have to get the hang of it, I'm afraid... When I have more time.

In my head canon (and the fic series I'm working on), Sonny and Rico will be dressed similar to this at their ceremony, with Rico in a white tux w/black accents and Sonny in a black tux w/white accents. Also, the quote is from the show, after yet another bad romance, Sonny tells Rico he wishes he could get his head and heart together, just once...
Miami Wedding Mood
This is a quote from Rico in the series, spelling his name: Tough, unique, bad, bold, and sassy. 😍 Also, check out the eyelashes on the top right photo.  I always say, oughta be illegal! 😉

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I've been thinking about it and I have to say that my #1 trope is AU - Canon Divergent. But I don't think of it that way because I don't really consider it to be a trope (for that matter, I don't consider it to be an AU). It's taking canon and altering it somehow, which I think the majority of fanfic does, as long as it's not set exactly in canon with no changes. Or am I not grasping the meaning quite right?

I did a Tiermaker chart and everything for last year's Snowflake, so I'm just going to link to that post here: Favorite Tropes 2025. My tastes haven't changed.

I am sticking to 3 because, if you saw my last attempt at "top X list" I, uh, have trouble restricting.

These are not in specific order, just in the order I thought of them:
  • I'm curious
  • I'm Justice-oriented
  • I am actually 5 puns in a trench coat pretending to be human

Christmas is my favorite holiday.  Its got joy, its got lights, its got music--what could be better!

This year I went a little fucking crazy deep into the Christmas music archives, adding as many Christmas songs and albums to my single streaming playlist as possible.  It now sits at an overwhelming amazing 1,594 songs for a total of 79 hours and 5 minutes!

There are so many songs I had never heard before adding them.  Many of my favorites from that bunch were written in the '60s, when Christmas music and lore were not so set in stone as we seem to think of them now.  (Even Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a modern invention, he of the Montgomery-Ward catalogue.  But I digress.)

Here is a couple of Top 10(ish) lists.  You may have heard of some of them, you may have heard of none of them (or maybe you know all of them??? if so, please share where, as I am constantly looking for more.)

Top 10 World-building songs:
  1. Jingle-O The Brownie - Tennessee Ernie Ford
  2. Uncle Mistletoe - The Three Suns
  3. Poppy the Puppy - Gene Autry
  4. The Three Little Dwarfs (Hard Rock, Coco, and Joe) - Gene Autry
  5. Little Klinker - Tennessee Ernie Ford
  6. Santa And The Purple People Eater - Sheb Wooley
  7. Captain Santa Claus (And His Reindeer Space Patrol) - Bobby Helms
  8. Freddie, The Little Fir Tree - Gene Autry
  9. Socko, The Smallest Snowball - The Bell Sisters & Spike Jones & His City Slickers
  10. Christy Christmas - Brenda Lee

Honorary mentions (eclectic collection):
  1. Christmas Is A-Comin' - Bing Crosby
  2. Santa Claus, That's Me! - Vernon Dalhart
  3. Who's That Up On The Roof - The Caroleers
  4. The Stingiest Man In Town - The Four Lads
  5. The Christmas Blues - Julia Lee & Her Boyfriends
  6. Christmas Rappin' - Kurtis Blow
  7. The Fairy On The Christmas Tree - BBC Orchestra & The Three Sisters
  8. The Bell That Couldn't Jingle - Burt Bacharach
  9. Snoopy's Christmas - The Royal Guardsmen
  10. The Night Before Christmas (In Texas That Is) - Montana Slim

Shout-out to the spoken word Christmas recordings:
  1. Christmas Dragnet (Yulenet) Parts 1 & 2 - Stan Freberg
  2. I Was A Teenage Reindeer - Jim Backus & Daws Butler
  3. I Yust Go Nuts At Christmas - Yogi Yorgesson
  4. Elvis For Xmas - Mad Milo

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

Honestly, trope doesn't entirely resonate. I can remember years ago, seeing something about tropes and just not relating to any of all that forced to share a bed/enemies to lovers/coffee shop AU stuff. But I do have a theme, which is alternate timelines. What if So and so never died? What if the villain made the obvious choice that the original writers seem to have somehow totally missed? What if Character X was the one to move from his cancelled spinoff to the main show? I have done them all.

The first series I ever saw to completion was Once Upon a Time, where Jafar was the one to move across from the Wonderland spinoff to the main show (imagine his lamp ending up in Gold's shop and Zelena accidentally letting him out). Another one was The Flash, where Eobard manipulated Nora into giving Barry the metahuman cure and the finale showed a dystopian 2049 that resulted from this (at the time I started that, I was convinced that was the route canon was going to take; to this day, I still don't get why the writers wasted time on Cicada rather than pursuing this route and just letting Eobard be the bad guy). I've saved Sun, Jin and Sayid on Lost several times over (and after a prompt in last year's three sentence ficathon, I was even tempted to expand on my attempt at Smokey McSmokeFace going back to the classical Roman era to get off the island while he was still human).

And yes, I have a few ongoing such works which I'm determined to finish. The School Spirits one where Mr Martin chooses to possess Emilio instead and the impact this has on Charley and Yuri is barely started (the upcoming new season may help with that), and I am determined I will push past my mental block on a) the Lost series where Sun joined the others in 1977 (I lost heart after the decision in canon to kill her off, which I still strongly disagree with 15 years on) and b) the Dark series where Ulrich successfully rescues Mikkel from 1986 (at this rate, I think I'm actually going to end up going down the Choose Your Own Adventure route, one where Ulrich and Mikkel get their happy ending and the minimum of characters are erased from existence, and one where Claudia gets hers.)

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a walk with Pip and the dogs, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, changed kitty litter (you know it’s Sunday!), and showered.

I went with another one of my own teas today, The Republic of Tea’s Blackberry Sage (Fruity black tea blended with herbs, which tells you nothing, really. Which is funny, because the ingredients just list black tea, natural blackberry and sage. o_O)

I took a nap, and watched two eps of Wild Cards and some Zoo Tampa. My one dismay is that I didn't get any more writing done.

Temps started out at 25.5(F) and reached 31.1. We had the overnight snow plus more snow today. Pip was busy shoveling and snow blowing.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded good on the phone. She said she’d eaten and it had settled fine. My brother visited earlier and Sister A was there when I called.

I always feel like wishlists are so hard for me to create.  They feel a lot like asking for help, another thing I have a terribly hard time doing.  Yes, this is something I'm currently working on in therapy.  How is that going?  Haha, don't worry about it.

But, in the interest of Putting Myself Out There, here is a wishlist:
  1. Top surgery
    1. Oh, we're starting in Hard Mode I see... fun!
  2. A couple new multi-color packs of Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens
  3. A good region-free DVD player
  4. Any kind of recommendations on how to learn written shorthand
  5. Advice on how to do candle magic when you can't burn candles
    1. Or, alternatively I guess, what to substitute for candle magic when you can't burn candles
  6. Recommendations for language learning apps that aren't Duolingo (or Rosetta Stone, only because I already have that)
  7. A year of Boot.dev
  8. Gift card(s) to Bookshop.org, Google Play Store, or BetterWorldBooks (the last of which might make me finally move my unending wishlist from Thriftbooks to BWB)
  9. Best places to learn Linux and such
  10. Obligatory newly-curated Amazon wishlist

please do not judge the fact that it took me 3 entire hours to post this single thing akdhgaolksdjflkhajd I sleep now before I break out in hives for Wanting Things and Letting People Know I Want Things

The Crochet Pile - January 2026

So I learned to crochet a bit over a year ago! (Picked it up on December 30th 2024, with many thanks due to my friend Rath ([tumblr.com profile] navigatorsghost around various internetlands) who cheerfully answered at least half a dozen plaintive wait what do I do here and other confusions on that first day alone.

I crocheted many things last year (so, so many - perhaps I'll make a bit of an overview to show off here later, because I'm quite proud of some of it), and I even did three little markets! (where I sold a number of things, yay!) . . . but I also amassed a solid chunk of open projects on Ravelry and WIPs in general.

(Sidenote, please look me up on Ravelry if you like! I'm [ravelry.com profile] Limmiel there and I am . . . on it more often than DW honestly, though not much in social areas partly because no one I hooked up with there is very active. XD)

Anyway! I had loosely intended to already, but I took inspiration from a [tumblr.com profile] pterribledinosaurdrawings update and comic to actually set a goal to smallen that Pile (metaphorical, mostly; they aren't all stashed in the same place, and a number of the open Ravelry projects are batches of [thing] for marketable stock), and in service of that, I set up a spreadsheet to track some things.

So as of January 10th (when I set it up; I went and removed a couple projects I went 'ehh nope' on before I set up the spreadsheet) my numbers look like:

Active WIPs: 23
(Subset that are market batches: 14)
Hibernating: 8

Total projects (complete, WIPs, everything): 138

I'll probably try and update once a month (probably on the last/first day of month) with updates on those numbers, how many things I finished in a month, if and how many from The Pile have been finished . . . how many things I added to The Pile. . . >.>

And here is one of my most recent projects, which I am quite pleased with!

Mini rose:

It's crocheted with embroidery floss and a 2mm hook, and is about 8cm tall. (And I did a fair bit of design work to refine the rose, though I started with someone's pattern for the petals before I did a bunch of tweaks, designed my own calyx, and figured out a stem.)

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works.

My absolute favorite trope in fanfiction is Mutual Pining! The bit where they think their love is unrequited and angst about it for ages before they find out it's requited after all. That's the good shit in my opinion.

And of course I love all those tropes that go so well with a side of pining: Only One Bed, Fake Relationship, Arranged Marriage, Friends With Benefits... The list goes on.

I answered a similar question in more or less the same way during last year's challenge. What can I say? I like what I like.

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

This is actually something that I've been wondering if I need to improve on, especially when it comes to writing series. Specifically, how much of a series I should have planned out before I start posting it, although admittedly there have been a few times where I've intended something as a one-shot and then realised that actually I can't really leave the story where it is.

Also, this is a process specifically to Dark more than any of my other fandoms, but I realised I should probably make sure I have a full understanding of the original timeline before I try to change it. A moment of sheer frustration at Ulrich getting stuck in 1953 and being unable to rescue Mikkel from 1986 led me to write a scene where Ulrich did get to 1986, and it became clear I couldn't just leave it there. But at that point in season 1, I didn't have the whole context of how that whole family tree/timeline worked, or the reasons why the character Claudia just would not let the timeline deviate that way. So I now find myself with an ending I know has to happen, but that I was trying to avoid and that's just blocking me finishing the final chapter. Anyone remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books as kids? I'm seriously thinking about those now as I'm tempted to write the one ending where Claudia fixes the timeline her way or trying to work out if there's any way of incorporating the alternate universe characters into the timeline so the minimum of people actually get erased from existence and Ulrich and Mikkel get their happy ending.

Something I have often done is been determined to get a fic finished before the next episode of a show aired and canon could contradict it. This tends to be easier with one shots than series, although I've only ever had one dickhead trying to "correct" me over not incorporating context that hadn't aired at the time that chapter was posted. But since that was a known troll, they could shove their corrections where the sun didn't shine. If that does come up, I don't rewrite.

Sometimes it involves going back and watching old episodes, or even just checking facts on fandom wikis, to make sure I have my details correct. (Even if I sometimes wonder why I bother - for example, I was trying to find out whether Fringe's Peter Bishop's specific date of birth was ever confirmed, to see if it was feasible for a time travelling Daniel from Lost to have met Walter before Peter was born to give him the name. In the process, I managed to establish that Walter's father's date of death in 1944 doesn't make sense for Walter's birth in 1946, so decided that if the writers weren't going to worry about that, I'd roll with my idea whatever!)

As far as requests go, if I'm not doing it as part of an exchange, I'll only consider if we've interacted. Just my way of making sure I don't end up granting a request for aforementioned known troll, whose MO was to ask for requests then spam anyone who didn't take their (very specific) requests with insults.

But anyway, what I'm wondering if I need to do is try and do more planning in advance of any story likely to become a series before I start posting it. I have one now I'm trying to work out (School Spirits, a rewrite of season 2 where Mr Martin possesses someone other than who he actually does possess in canon) so I'm going to start with that.

I had that doctor’s appointment this morning. He didn’t even do an exam/swab, just had me tell him again the same things I told the nurse in yesterday’s messaging spree and prescribed me Fluconazole tablets. Two. Take one today and one in four days. Which naturally necessitated a trip to the Pharmacy. I took the first pill as soon as I got back to the car.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I placed two orders, including Chewy. Pip’s supper was leftover chicken so no cooking, yay!

I decided to hit my own cupboard for today’s tea, The Republic of Tea’s Orange Spice (green tea blended with oranges and spices, which tells me exactly nothing new o_O). I was worried it would be strong because of the spice part, but I was reminded just how weak green tea is.

I handwrote ~2,300 words on my [community profile] smallfandombang fic!! I was on a roll, and I can hardly believe it! And I even read more in Husband Material.

I also watched the Bills game, which was a heartbreaker. So close, and yet so far. They did it to themselves, though, so Denver deserved the win as much as I hate to say it. Interceptions and penalties are not going to win you the game. Congratulations, [personal profile] mistressofmuses!

Temps started out at 25.7(F) and reached 36.5. We were supposed to get less than an inch of snow, but got a bit more than that, with more expected overnight. Yay.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded okay when I talked to her; she actually sounded a bit tired. She said she had mostly felt well during the day, but at that moment was feeling a little off. Both Sister A and S were visiting, so that was nice.

I'm already having a great time doing [community profile] threesentenceficathon. Pimping my guys, mostly, I admit. 😉

I'm almost finished with my fic for [community profile] smallfandomfest . All it needs is the sex scene, so naturally I'm procrastinating. But guess what, it's the longest fic I've written since 2019! Looks like I might be finally going to start writing some longer stuff again. Amazing what an extra dose of inspiration can do...

HELP! I just don't know... I've always posted my drabbles to AO3 as 'chapters' in a drabble collection... Some people think that's "cheating". I'm thinking of posting them separately now -- but honestly, to me that feels like 'padding' my story count. I'm so undecided.
