Ten thousand gilders, all cursed. The final trap laid by the dread Emperor Nole for any unwary treasure hunter. Worse than valueless, they had done something to his soul, something that would have worse than killed him had he not been saved, once again, beyond all probability. He'd been found lying underneath the statue of Gaia in Mercator, not moving, barely breathing. They'd brought out the priest to save him. He'd been hit by only the residual effect of the curse, having been teleported out of the labyrinth's inner chamber by... something. They were calling him an Apostle of Light now, a holy warrior. He didn't want anything to do with the Church or any of their rules, nothing that would tie him down or prevent him from recovering the money he'd lost. He didn't believe in the big haul, in any offers that seemed too good to be true, but there was always regular money in adventuring and monster hunting. He just had to take less big gambles, was all. Besides, he was fairly sure his lucky escape had more to do with a certain bat-winged sprite than any Goddess. He needed to find her again, thank her properly.
