A carbon freeze chamber was no place for a secret affair but it wasn't like they had much choice and at least nobody else wanted to be there either. It wasn't even that cold, not when it was on standby. The device required an immense amount of power to run, so it was usually a battle to stop it overheating. Its central chamber looked like sharp steel petals unfurling around them, the blue and red maintenance lights running through it like neon ivy trails, like this was some sort of secret garden made of cruel machinery. The hums and creaks of the machinery were loud and occasionally made her think of ghostly wailing. This was definitely a haunted place. Sensitive to the spirits, she could constantly feel the eyes of the eternally frozen corpses, on display like trophies, staring at her.

Not that he minded. In fact, he practically flaunted it, reassuring her that this was his domain and nothing existed here that was not firmly under his control (except her, he hastily added when she gave him a warning glare that spoke of the entire worlds executed, their history cut off before its time, in the deep darkness she inhabited, the door she stood before). It excited him, she knew, like some people found it exciting to be in a graveyard, or deliberately chose somewhere that still had a risk of them being seen. Just as he enjoyed it when she lapsed into ancient Lavian when any kind of strong sensation put her into a trance these days. That spooked most people as well but he said it sounded like their love was some kind of higher ritual.

Every time he promised her that he wouldn't accidentally nudge one of the levers or mistime it so that one of the scheduled tests of the machine would happen. She reassured him in return that she wouldn't lose control of her powers and start predicting dire fates for him or even shifting the world closer to the burned timeline that was hers alone. It had become another ritual in itself. He approved of more ritual - somewhere underneath all that brokenness there was an ordered mind, one attuned to the Island and fated to keep it going even if he was the only one left.

Whereas her destiny was... as it had always been.

Her powers of clairvoyance were never that clear when it came to love, it was far too chaotic, random, poorly timed, sick and twisted a force of nature, and she certainly hadn't expected something as completely insane as this, but she decided she might as well enjoy it while it lasted, before this, too, was swallowed up by the black hole that lay on the horizon of her inevitable fate.

She just wished he would take off his damn electrified bionic pipe wrench thing.
