He's been planning on asking his girl something all week, and as he watches her now pulling back from their kiss with her eyes still partially closed and a sweet smile on her face, Slater figures now is as good a time as any to pop the question, maybe even better. "So," he asks, trying to sound casual, his hands still on her hips, "how about you coming to the game with me tonight?"

All the other guys on the team are going to have their girls, but of course, most of their girls are cheerleaders. They make every game. Jessi hardly ever comes to any sporting event, and there's a big test Monday. He knows where her priorities lay, but he has to ask, especially after last week when the guys teased him for his girl yet again not being present at their game. She didn't even see the winning touchdown he made, although she did congratulate him when she heard about it Monday.

Jessi shrugs as nonchalantly as though he's asked her about the weather. "Okay," she agrees, eyes bright and wide open. Her smile doesn't even falter.

Slater pops a brow up before he can stop himself. "Just like that?" he questions.

She shrugs again. "Just like that," she agrees, smile widening. Then her eyes search his. "You sound surprised."

It's his turn to lift his muscular shoulders into a shrug. "It's just . . . I'm not used to you being so complaisant when it comes to sports."

Her grin widens. "You remembered last week's word!" He almost blushes, but then her grin turns teasing. "And I'm not used to asking."

"So if I ask more often, Momma, you'll come more often?" He angles in for another kiss.

She doesn't pull away, but she does wriggle her nose at him. God, she's so cute when she does that! "Maybe."

It's all the answer she'll give right now, but it's way more than he got the last time he asked her to come. He'll definitely take what he can get from her accompanying him to the game and from their kisses. His lips touch hers again first, but he lets her lead the kiss, meeting her passion with equal passion and just a little more and letting her tongue glide over his teeth. His tongue meets hers, and although he could kiss her all day long, when he feels her begin to back away just a little, he lets her go. He'll never push her.

Jessi's breathing hard when their kiss breaks. Her forehead leans against his. "Maybe before the game we can catch a burger at Max's?"

He grins and nods. "I haven't got anything better to do than spend time with you." The words are out before he can stop them. He makes a face, realizing immediately how corny he sounds. Maybe the guys are right: maybe he does let her ride him.

But the smile she flashes him is a far more meaningful reward than anything any one else can ever give him. "Good. Me, neither." He almost asks her about the test or the science fair coming next week, but when she loops her arm in his, he can't think of any questions. All that matters is that he's got his woman on his arm and she's smiling at him. Beaming, he leads the way to Max's.

It's a short trip made shorter by the set of wheels his father bought him for his last birthday, a bribery attempt, Slater knows, to get him to go to the military college he wants him to choose after Bayside. He doesn't like thinking about the coming days, because he knows he can't follow Jessi after high school. She'll go to Stanford or Harvard, and he won't be able to follow her to either place. His grades will never be good enough for such an institution.

He pushes those thoughts away as he slides into a parking positron and looks again at his beautiful woman. Maybe she'll wait for him? he thinks but shoves the thoughts away harder. He has no right to ask her to put her life on hold for him. She's smiling at him as though she's oblivious to what their future holds, and maybe she is. All her days have to look bright to a genius like her.

He shakes his dark, curly head as he gets out. Jessi pops up right beside him and again latches on to his arm. "What's wrong?" she asks.

He shakes his head again. "Nothing." He won't let her know what he's thinking. He won't upset her when she's so clearly happy.

"Maybe this'll help," she says and leans forward and kisses him. Even her simplest kisses send fire rushing throughout his entire being!

He clutches her tighter to him. "You always help, Momma." And she does. He's so much happier because of her and the love they share. He only wishes it could last.

She grins at him. "Come on," she urges, tugging on his hand. "I'm starving."

He frowns, knowing this behavior is unlike her, but lets her lead the way. No sooner do they step foot through Max's open doors than a roar of boisterous and joyous voices exclaim. They're shouting congratulations at him, but it's to Jessi he looks. "Surprise," she says, grinning up at him.

"What is this?" he questions.

"Just a small party in honor of every one's favorite sports star: you. It was your team's idea."

"But you helped," he marvels.

"Of course I helped!"

"You hate sports."

She shrugs, still grinning. "Maybe they are a chauvinistic, egotistical waste of time." He frowns; she flashes a bigger grin. "But they're a waste of time you like to indulge. You enjoy them. You're proud of what you do with them, and I'm proud of you." She leans forward and kisses him again. Her lips linger on his in front of almost the entire school, her tongue curling around his and bringing him deeper into her mouth.

In that moment, Slater's prouder than if he had a scored a thousand touchdowns and won every game every season he's ever played. He's bursting with pride to have her as his woman, kissing him in front of everybody, being so proud and supportive of him, and perhaps, he thinks, maybe, just maybe, they do have a future together after school's over. He smiles against her mouth, deepening their kiss until one of his team mates calls out, "Hey, Slater, you gonna kiss all day or you gonna play?"

Slater lifts his head from his girl's, but with Jessi still clutched tightly at his side, he whispers quickly to her, "I'd rather kiss you all day," and winks. But then he calls out aloud, "We're gonna do more than play! We're gonna win!"

Cheers again echo throughout the small restaurant, but to Slater's ears, Jessi's cheers are the loudest. He beams as he gazes into her beautiful face and eyes shining with pride for him. The way she's looking at him right now makes him feel like he can do anything. He can win this game; he can win them all! He can take on the world! Most importantly of all, when school is over and their educations are completed and behind them, he can find her again and make sure they have a bright future together, after all!

The End
