She remembers Santa's words with a smile every Christmas after meeting him as an adult. She doesn't forget the waitress, either, but she knows the girl was lying. After all, Santa had told her she was very naughty, and she had checked the homeless shelter. There had been no man by the name the girl had given her and no one resembling Santa Claus so greatly. She doesn't speak of him to her friends again, but she never forgets.
She writes him a letter every Christmas Eve, leaving it with milk and cookies on a stand at the foot of her bed. In each letter, Elka wishes him well. She tells him she hopes things are going well for him and that he's patched things up with Mrs. Claus, but she tells him, too, just in case he hasn't, that she's still lonely and interested. She reminds him that he told her she was just naughty enough and thinks to herself, with a grin, how right he was. After all, being ninety something years old, she no longer expects any presents, but she also can't help wanting a chance with the jolliest man of them all, the only man who ever has made her completely happy.
She smiles each Christmas Eve as she goes to sleep gazing out her window, hoping for a chance that never comes, and eventually dreaming of a childhood in Poland, a life so long ago but made so happy by the shared joy of one incredible man. Each Christmas morning, she awakes alone, knowing another chance has passed her by, and yet, still, being as happy as a child again as she finds her milk, her cookies, and her letter, too, all gone. She may not have the man of whom she now dreams, but the world still has Santa Claus, thanks to her.
