Lightning tried not to roll his eyes as he watched the finalists competing in the Rust Eze race and listened to his boyfriend shouting encouraging words to the weakest of the lot. His tires spun with his agitation. When Mater finally hushed again, he looked over at him. "You usually root for the undercar, don'tcha?"

"You bet!" Mater exclaimed, whistling between his buck teeth. His tow swung behind him in a clear sign of his joy. "We Rust Eze champs may not be as purty as you race cars, but we still got a lot going for us."

Lightning chose not to comment that Mater had never won a race before and, thereby, could not be considered a Rust Eze champ. Instead, he wondered aloud, his big eyes looking up at Mater, "Then how did you ever come to be my biggest fan?"

"Gosh," Mater said. "You don't know?"

"No." Lightning's hood moved in a motion signaling the negative.

"I really gotta spell it out for ya, huh?"

"I would like to know," Lightning answered truthfully. "I'm not a Rust Eze model, Mater, and I advertise for them just because you want me to so badly. Before you, I never even got close to Rust Eze."

"Yeah, and you still won't let me use it on that spot ya got balding from racing Doc across the desert at noon last week."

"I do not have any balding spots! I am not losing my tires, and even if I was, I would have Luigi fix them! I most certainly would not let them be touched by Rust Eze!"

"Purcisely."

The crowd went wild suddenly, and the partners looked back to the race. Lightning's fender hung a bit lower in shock as Mater's pick of the motley crew actually pulled ahead. The little car screamed his own joy along with his fans. Lightning grimaced. He could barely hear himself think for the noise.

Lightning pulled back a pace as Mater continued hollering throughout the remainder of the race and then bellowed and cheered as the little car cut through the yellow ribbon. Only after the winning ceremonies did Mater realized that Lightning had not followed him to the stands. His tires spun as he quickly went in search of him. Lightning was speeding circles through the racetrack and muttering to himself how he could beat anything with Rust Eze.

Mater slid onto the race track, sped backwards, and soon caught up to Lightning. He knew he could only catch him this way, by going backwards and not forwards, but he didn't care. Lightning was the best, and he was lucky to even know him, let alone be best buds and lovers with him. "Of course nobody with Rust Eze can beat you, Lightning! Nobody can beat you!"

"I know!" Lightning called back over the roar of their engines, but he kept moving and, when Mater started to keep up with him, pressed his accelerator pad all the way to his floor. He shot circles around the old tow truck until Mater swung his hook and grabbed his rear end.

"MATER!" Lightning pouted as Mater drove up to him.

The truck eyed the car. "Now are you going to listen?"

"Listen to what?" grumped Lightning. "The virtues of Rust Eze?"

"No." Mater stuck out his tongue. "The virtues of Lightning McQueen. Lightning, I'll always love Rust Eze, but I'll always love you more, too."

"But how did you even come to look at me when I wasn't doing your Rust Eze?"

"I said it once, and I'll say it again. Like I told ya earlier, Lightning," Mater said, "you are the best, Rust Eze or no Rust Eze. I'd never seen anything so beautiful or sparkly when I saw you in your first televised race." He smiled broadly at him and swung his tow, which was still clinging to Lightning's back bumper. "I've been hooked on ya ever since."

Lightning's engine finally quieted. "Really?" he questioned softly.

"Really." Mater nodded and drove closer to him. He touched his front fender to his and slowly lowered his toe and Lightning's bumper but did not release him.

"I am the best."

"You are!"

Lightning smiled brilliantly at Mater as the sun beamed and sparkled on his new, bright red paint job. "Ka chow!"

"Oh!" Mater cried in delight, grinning. "Definitely the best!"

Lightning's smile filled his grill. He pressed his fender to Mater's again in a sweet kiss. "I am the best," he agreed, "but you're the second best."

Mater didn't argue. Instead, he just kept kissing Lightning as the sun began to sink beyond the track and murmured softly, "And I'm all yours."

The End
