"When did you first know?"
Dana looks quickly to her younger stepsister on her right. "Excuse me?" she asks, uncertain that she's heard Al's uncharacteristically softly spoken query.
"When did you first know Rich was the one?"
Dana pauses. She's still surprised that Al's asking the question and even more surprised that she finds herself without an answer. She looks pass her to the trees, to the sky, to the grass beneath their feet, and still she has no answer. She watches colorful leaves dance on the Fall breeze, and still she can't seem to figure out how to answer Al's question.
Her forehead creases with both concern and puzzlement. She remembers the first time she kissed Rich like it was yesterday. She remembers every scent, every sight, every touch they've ever shared. But for once, the strait A student doesn't know how to form the answer her heart wants to give.
She remembers how sweet Rich looked that evening, how innocent and befuddled, how helpless. She remembers the glances she took without him knowing and the glances she caught him taking of her. She recalls vividly looking into those sensual, deep, and dark eyes of his and wanting to stay right there, watching him forever. She remembers how her necklace got caught in his sweater and the first kiss they shared. It held a passion like no other she's ever known except for those sweetest moments she's shared with him. Their kiss had confirmed her feelings, but deep down inside, she'd already know she loved him.
But when did she know? she wonders. When did she actually know that Rich was the only one for her, that what they shared was more than a fond affection, was actually true love? Had it been that first look, that first touch? Was it when he brushed her hair or when he genuinely smiled at her and didn't make fun of her? It couldn't have been just by looking at him, she knows that for she'd misjudged him, the first time she'd seen him, as being just another unintelligble dork who was stupid enough to hang with JT.
So when had she first known? Had it been during that first night together, or had it happened later when Rich had stood up for her honor or refused to push her and allowed her to take her time with every step of their relationship? No, she'd known she'd loved him almost from the first time they'd started dating; all the other moments they had shared, sweet, magical, and loving as they were, had only added to the love she felt for her wonderful man.
It must have happened that first night, she thought, looking back, but when exactly? Had it been in their first kiss, or had it happened the first time she'd bothered to look deeper into his eyes? They were surely the most enchanting eyes she'd ever seen . . .
"Never mind," Al mutters, her voice breaking into Dana's cherished memories. "They're coming."
"Hey, Barky, I thought you had enough fur to keep you warm."
"JT!" Rich reprimands him before Dana can sling an insult back at her stepbrother. He steps up to her and holds out her jacket. "Here, sweetheart." Her fingers touch his as she accepts the offered jacket, and their eyes meet again. He's eyes are just as soft, sweet, gentle, and alluring as they had been that first time she'd gazed into them. She feels the same catch of her breath and quickening of her heartbeat that happens every time he draws near to her and again when they touch or their eyes meet.
She blinks to move herself from the rapture in which they can so easily hold her. She could gaze into his sweet, adoring, and handsome eyes all day, but then, they'd never get to school. She realizes, gazing into his eyes, the truth of the matter. She can see his soul in his eyes. She sees the reflection of the sweet, wonderful, genuine, caring, and loving gentleman he is in his chocolaty, dark orbs. She sees everything he is, and most especially everything he is to her, and her own future, with him, in his eyes. She smiles, murmurs softly, "It's in the eyes," leans forward, and kisses him.
"What's in the eyes? Barky, what kind of stupid line is that, and why are you bothering to hit him with a line any way? The poor dude's already stupid enough to only want him."
Rich sighs happily as Dana slowly lifts her mouth from his. "A caveman like you, JT, will never understand."
Sam, who's walked up to join them, punches her boyfriend's shoulder. "Ow! What's that for?"
"For not being sweet like Rich," Sam retorts as Dana turns away from them and wraps an arm around Rich's shoulder.
He leans into her side, but she pauses to look meaningfully at Al, who's grinning secretly and beaming with a mystery all her own. Dana winks. Her smile grows, and she lets them walk away without saying anything else. She has her answer now, although, she suspects, she already knew it. Just as Dana said, she's already seen the love of her life in his eyes; she only hopes he proves to be as sweet and caring for her as Rich is for Dana.
Al trails behind the loving couple. She tries to tune out the couple fighting behind her as she follows them. She hopes all the best for Rich and Dana, but still she hopes for a love as sweet, tender, and eternal as theirs.
