Summary: Topher is surprised to find ex-agent Ballard standing at his door.

Topher Brink was in the middle of changing his shirt when there was a knock at the door. He figured it was Ivy so he continued to pull the shirt down, and put the other one on the overhead shelf.

His assistant could wait. He figured it had to be her, because no one else even ventured close to the cave like room behind his office. (Except the laundry lady, but she didn’t count, because she always made sure to come at times when he wasn’t there.)

He grabbed a pair of pants, was about to change them out, when he realized the door had open, and the person was standing in the doorway. Topher put the pants back on the shelf. He turned and gave a faked smile. “Can I help you?”

The lights in his office were only on halfway, so he could only see the figure in shadows in the doorway. He hoped it was not an active who had wandered where they weren’t allowed.

“I figured I would come visit you.” Ex- FBI Agent Paul Ballard stepped farther into the small room. “ That is okay, isn’t it?” Ballard shut the door behind him.

“I don’t think there is technically anything that says handlers can’t be back here.” He made his voice sound as if he didn’t really care. The truth was very few people ventured back here. Most of them didn’t even notice the wall, since the door blended in with the wall.

The truth was Topher was glad that not many people ventured back here. There weren’t many people he would trust to see the mess he could make in this tiny room. Also, the fact that the last person who had come in was Whiskey, and he was a little concerned how she had easily managed to slip in.

He forced himself to blink hard. He promised he wouldn’t think about Whiskey. He just hoped she was fine on her own, maybe she was finding the answers he was contractually obligated not to tell her.

He looked up, and Ballard had moved expertly in the semi-darkness to sit on the edge of the mattress on the floor.

Ballard leaned back slightly in a relaxed pose. “So how is life?”

Topher walked over towards him carefully, confused. He sat down next to him on the bed, trying to figure out Ballard’s alternative motive for being here. “I have a feeling you didn’t come here to idly talk to me.”

Ballard chuckled very softly. “Aren’t we technically co-workers, don’t coworkers check up on each other.”

Topher was confused if Paul’s tone was in jest. Maybe this was some of kind of joke to him. He could barely see the former agent, but he could see a sort of smile (or smirk) playing at the corner of Paul’s mouth.

“You almost sound like you actually care we are coworkers. Almost as if you don’t care anymore about taking out the dollhouse from the inside.” Topher’s laugh came out more mean than he intended it to sound. He suddenly realized Ballard had moved closer to him on the mattress.

Ballard let out a very soft sigh, as if he was torn between something. He had obviously not come here to have a discussion on the dollhouse or the Rossum Corporation.

“Maybe this was a mistake to come here.” Ballard said in almost a defeated whisper, though he made no move to get up.

Topher suddenly felt panicky for some strange reason. Even though he wasn’t sure if he could completely trust Ballard to be in here, he didn’t want him to leave either. It was a low blow to attack him. A million things rushed in his head to say but the only thing he can manage is a kind of choked, “Don’t leave.” He was sure it sounded very stupid.

Instead of moving to get up, Ballard moved closer to Topher. He leaned over and kissed Topher very softly on the lips.

Topher had never even thought of Ballard romantically. So, it was a surprise even to him, when he pulled Ballard in for a deeper kiss.
