Suckers

Riddick doesn't believe in promises. He's broken too many.
Carolyn Frye was just another in a long line of lies.
He'd sworn to protect Imam and Jack. They were dead. He was alive.

He's never kept a promise to love forever. Hot words muttered in an ear, or against sweaty skin, a promise of eternal love, undying passion.
All lies said and forgotten to tens if not hundreds.

Somewhere back in memory, there was a promise of family, strength, and honor.
A people who fought for everything they had and defended it fiercely.
Cradle songs of Furyan Supremacy wiped out in a night of fire and blood.

People who make promises are liars.
People who believe promises are suckers who haven't learned to play the game.
That's what he's always told himself.
Nights in the slam when sweet and gentle was promised but gave way to cruel and hard.

Riddick's Lord Marshall now. He doesn't make promises. He demands obedience, but offers nothing in return.
The Necros already have their broken promise of the Underverse. He can use someone else's lie to make his own life easier.
'
It's easy to rule them. They are a perfect weapons and he's always loved a good weapon.
He commands and they obey. The Elementals are dust in the wake of the fleet before they can put the warning out to the rest of the universe.
Lies of peace slip easily from his tongue and he watches world after world burn.

Riddick picks and chooses from the Necros for bed partners. Some last days and some only hours.
The sweet smelling Dame only last a night. She promises too much.
She speaks of faithfulness and love, but she has slipped from between her husband's sheets into Riddick's bed.
Her beauty is a hollow shell wrapped around a serpent's heart.

Vaako says nothing of his wife's infidelity. Their wedding promise broken before the court of the Lord Marshall.
The warrior makes no promises to Riddick. He does not whisper placating words in his ear, like the sycophantic courtiers, who seem to waiting for the moment Riddick's guard is down.

When Riddick takes Vaako to his bed there are no words. No promises of love.
Riddick does not offer the title of consort to tempt or tease. Vaako doesn't pledge servitude and undying devotion.
They are not gentle with each other. There is no false sweetness hiding bitter intent.

After, Riddick doesn't speak about their future, nor does Vaako rest his head on Riddick's chest and speak of his plans for the Necromongers.
They sleep. They do not make promises of any kind.
There will be no binding ceremony to tie them to one another. Riddick will never promise to forsake all others. Vaako will not promise to love and to cherish.
People who make promises are liars.
People who believe promises are suckers who haven't learned to play the game.

Awwww! I liked this, even though I'm a sucker *g* for a kinder, gentler Riddick, one who does believe in promises. I'm glad this prompt inspired you. *g*

A bit dark, but at the same time, I see a twist of light that they are honest with each other, and their relationship isn't built on false promises or lies. There is no romance here, and I think their alliance is the stronger for it.

Very nicely done!

Strangely, I did not find it as dark, but very enjoyable and interesting to read.
Maybe, because the film is so full of death, I find this almost peaceful in contrast.
(Admittedly, I never liked Vaako's wife quite as much as him.)
