Title: Blood Shards
Author: [personal profile] tehexile
Fandom: NigHTs Into Dreams
Pairing/Characters: Reala
Rating/Category: PG-13/Gen
Word Count: 290
Spoilers: no
other tags: villain POV, worldbuilding, mild creepiness
notes: inspired by Undertale but not actually incorporating parts of its world. might become part of a larger fic canon as I like making the Alarm Eggs do creepy things.
Summary: Reala doesn't normally bother with Ideya types other than the main ones but that's a large shard of Determination and someone's done something to it.

Reala found a shard of Determination yesterday. It was red, not the fiery red of Courage but a vital, flowing, pulsing red like blood rushing to and from a beating heart. There were many more Ideya than five, enough for every possible shade of each colour. They were mostly not harvested as they were too rare or volatile or difficult to extract. Too much Determination tended to mean your Dreamer refused to wake up, or went straight back to sleep again, and hounded you forever until you gave up your attempt, and besides, there was hardly any in existence that congregated in one soul in significant enough quantities to mine. The shard had caught Reala's attention because of its size and because...

Reala shuddered. It was floating free, not fixed to a dreamer. Ideya did manifest spontaneously without a dreamer sometimes, especially around mass hysteria and panic, strong feelings of collective identity, other large clouds of humans emitting lots of vague but strong emotions where nobody could remember exactly who had done what. This was different, though. Someone had deliberately and precisely cut this away, as if they had a scalpel that could anatomise the human soul. The Ideya would have shattered if it had been anything but Determination.

If the denizens of the waking world were capable of something like that now, they all had to be careful. If this was another faction in the Dreamscape, doubly so. And if this was accidental or had happened naturally, that was a more terrifying precedent yet.

"The Alarm Eggs, yes, they could have done it," muttered Reala, carefully handling the blood-red glowing gem with a pair of tongs and poking it into a thick-walled strongbox, ready to present to master Wizeman.

Hi! I just noticed when I was tagging this post that your coding and spacing got a bit mucked up, in case you wanted to fix it.
