Summary: Ethan persuades Spencer to come to their high school reunion to get him away from any law enforcement responsibilities for awhile, not aware of what one of their former classmates is planning.
Ethan Hyde listened as the water ran in the shower in the bathroom. He stroked his neatly trimmed black goatee for a minute, as he began to regret this trip. He was glad that his old friend, Dr. Spencer Reid, was here, but they could just spent some time together and not deal with the dreaded high school reunion.
Ethan slumped back on the double bed he was sitting on. He couldn’t remember what had made him decide that they both needed to come back to Vegas. Ethan could have gone to Virginia and spent time with Spencer, or he could have had Spencer met him in New Orleans. What had made him think that he could sit through a week with the same vapid and uninteresting people who had shunned him in high school?
Spencer was going to laugh when Ethan mentioned his second thoughts. Spencer had been jaded about the idea ever since he had gotten the card. He told Ethan on the phone, right after the invitations and itineraries had been sent out that he had tossed his right in the trash can. It had taken Ethan three weeks to convince Spencer that he should come.
He had thought in the beginning that it would be a great idea. They could spend a week together, laughing at the failures of their former classmates. Plus, Ethan was sure that Spencer needed the vacation from the Bureau. He hadn’t really taken a vacation for almost a year. This was the only reason that Spencer had finally agreed; the pressure of the cases he saw every day was getting to him.
Ethan also knew that Spencer had been struggling with his sobriety lately, and thought coming home would help him clear his head a little. Though, they had many events to attend to at various hotels on the strip, Ethan had worked it out where they could go visit Spencer’s mother at the asylum one afternoon. He had also secretly planned a day outing that Spencer would enjoy.
Wandering across the room, Ethan opened his guitar case. He pulled his guitar out, and also pulled out some of the sheet music that was stuffed in the inside pocket. He had been working on a new song for almost a year, and he thought he was almost through with it. He would never admit it but it was a love song to Spencer that he had started shortly after he had last seen his friend.
He had loved him since high school. It had been a hard few years when they had stopped speaking since Ethan couldn’t handle the pressure of the Academy at Quantico. Ethan knew that Spencer had probably been upset over that, in the end the chaotic life of the Bureau had kept him from making contact. Spencer had never blamed others for his problem; as he was more likely to blame himself thinking he wasn’t good enough.
Ethan hummed the song to himself as he strummed on the guitar, occasionally stopping to change some things around on the sheet music. He was still fussing with the song, when Spencer came out of the bathroom.
Spencer’s brown hair was still damp, but he almost didn’t look like he had taken a shower as while in the bathroom, Spencer had changed into a pair of tan cords and a light blue button down shirt with small black circles embedded in the background.
“I’m starting to regret this.” Ethan said as he began to play a slightly adapted Duke Ellington piece. “People are going to think we are going out if we show up together.”
Spencer chuckled softly, shaking his head. He sat down on the other bed, and began to put on the socks he had laid out. He wasn’t sure how to react to that. Technically, both he and Ethan were saying people so it wouldn’t be as if the rumors would have any truth to them.
One sock was black, and the other was a bluish, but Ethan wasn’t going to mention to his friend they didn’t match. Spencer hadn’t worn matching socks for a long time, despite all his intelligent, he thought they somehow brought him bad luck. Ethan wasn’t sure if the bad things had happened to Spencer on the days that he actually wore matching socks because they really were bad luck or if it was a self-fulfilling prophecy in that he assumed they made his luck bad, so bad things happened.
Ethan was about to say something else, when Spencer’s cell phone rang. “Wow, even on vacation the batphone rings.” Ethan teased.
Spencer didn’t comment as he looked at the caller id. “I have to take this.” He said as he saw David Rossi’s name come on the screen. He wasn’t at all sure why Rossi would be calling him, if the caller id said Prentiss it would be an entirely different matter. “Reid?” He answered confused.
“I was wondering if I could borrow some of your books?” Rossi answered quickly in his gruff no-nonsense voice.
“Sure. Prentiss has my spare key this month. You can just leave a list of the books you took on my desk, if you need them past the time I get back.” Spencer held the phone up with his shoulder, so he could finish putting on his socks. He began to put on the pair of blue and white tennis shoes he had brought.
“I thought I would ask since I didn’t want to wander around the apartment, or force Prentiss to get them for me.” Rossi sounded impatient, but Spencer couldn’t remember the last time the older agent hadn’t had a bit of impatience in his tone.
“There is a manual that tells where all the books are located on the top of the first bookcase you encounter.”
“Thank you. Enjoy your reunion.”
“You’re welcome.” Spencer said, but realized that Rossi had already hung up the phone. He put the phone back on the nightstand for a minute, and laced up his sneakers.
“You’re gone three hours and they already need something from you.” Ethan chuckled as he put the guitar back in its case.
Spencer shrugged, not sure what he should say.
